Something that very few people, dieticians or diet plans take into consideration is the acid base content of your food. However this is something that can have a major impact on many aspect of your health and wellbeing.
Everything that you eat reports to the kidneys as either an acid or an alkali base. Acid producing foods are meat, fish, grains, legumes, dairy products and salt. Alkali producing foods are fruit and vegetables. Fats are generally neutral.
Eating to many acid foods without enough alkali rich fruit and vegetables can lead to the kidneys handling an overall acidic load. Which can cause high blood pressure, increased risk of kidney stones, aggravate asthma, contribute to bone and muscle loss with aging, osteoporosis, stomach cancer, insomnia and air and motion sickness to name a few.
Another important thing to consider is calcium. You may think that you are consuming enough calcium, which will help maintain bone strength and structure, however if you have a high acidic load, then lots of this calcium will be excreted in the urine. The more alkali a state your body is in, the more calcium your body will retain.
This is another, among the many other, reasons to make sure you are consuming plenty of fruit and vegetables. So every time you consume a food with a net acid load, be sure to balance it out with some alkali based fruit and vegetables.
